Dir. Jonah Hill. 2018, 85 mins. U.S. DCP. With Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, Na-kel Smith, Katherine Waterston. Jonah Hill wrote and directed this tender coming-of-age story of a 13-year-old boy who finds sanctuary and friendship among a group of skateboarders in 1990s Los Angeles. Offering an intimate look at the social dynamics among a group of outsider teens, and a close attention to period detail, it movingly captures the rebelliousness, marginalization, and camaraderie that characterized the emergence of skate culture. The film evokes the tone and cinematic style of ’90s-era skate videos, explored in the exhibition Recording the Ride: The Rise of Street Style Skate Videos, now on view in the Amphitheater Gallery/Jane Henson Amphitheater.
