Last Summer

No one makes layered, provocative dramas quite like Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl, Romance), whose latest film has proven one of her most incendiary, and maybe one of her best. A fearless Léa Drucker plays Anne, a lawyer who focuses on the protection of minors; when she finds herself inexplicably, sexually drawn to 17-year-old Theo (Kircher), the son of her husband (Rabourdin) from a prior marriage, while the boy is visiting for the summer, she embarks on a dangerous affair that reveals not only her own surprising desires but also her propensity for manipulation and deceit. Complexly human yet merciless, Last Summer is a wildly gripping inquiry into how easily one can abuse power to maintain control.
