SCREENING

La Commune (Paris, 1871)

Ongoing

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Peter Watkins. 2000, 345 mins. plus intermission. BetaSP. With Bernard Bombeau, Pierre Barbieux, Eliane Annie Adalto, Maylis Bouffartigue, Geneviève Capy, Anne Carlier.  This epic was the film Peter Watkins was always building towards, an anti-monoform, self-conscious, epic performance video about a reenactment of a transformative historical moment. With an inimitable style that melds present-tense urgency, reportage, Brechtian dramatization featuring non-professionals and stunt filmmaking, Watkins (and his cast of hundreds) conjure the ill-fated Paris Commune of 1871, a fleeting moment of triumphant radicalism, when the working class—including immigrant laborers—were able to imagine and create a new kind of world. The excitement is infectious, the downfall is instructive. —Robert Greene
