Dir. D. Smith. 2023, 73 mins. DCP. In this wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City—Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver—who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back, the film vibrates with energy, sex, and hard-earned wisdom. Edited and shot in evocative black–and–white, Kokomo City is the feature directorial debut of the two-time Grammy-nominated producer, singer, and songwriter who made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show (Love & Hip Hop). The film won the 2023 Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, and the 2023 Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.
Kokomo City also screens on Saturday, October 21, at 5:00 p.m. with the short film Alpha Kings.
