Dir. Steven Spielberg. U.S., 1975, 124 mins. 35mm. With Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary. The summer movie that started it all, this improbable, against-all-odds blockbuster about a New England vacation spot terrorized by a great white shark proved that Spielberg was a force to be reckoned with. Adapting Peter Benchley’s hit novel, not only did he compose a technical masterpiece of Hitchcockian suspense by ingeniously working around an unwieldy rubber prop, he created an exhilarating film of existential horror that kept millions away from the beach. And with Scheider, Shaw, and Dreyfuss, he gave audiences a trio of unforgettable adventurers who, in great seventies fashion, went against the grain of American macho. For better or for worse, American cinema was never the same again. (Released June 20, 1975)
