Dir. Frank Oz. 1992, 101 mins. DCP. With Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn, Dana Delany, Julie Harris, Donald Moffat, Peter MacNicol. Synthesizing themes in Oz’s previous hits Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and What About Bob?, the director’s playful, Massachusetts-set screwball comedy from summer 1992 casts Martin as a straitlaced architect named Newton whose dreams are shattered after his girlfriend (Delany) turns down his marriage offer, leaving the house he built for them unoccupied. Later, after a one-night stand with a Boston waitress named Gwen (Hawn), he comes to learn he cannot get rid of her—especially after she takes it upon herself to move into Newton’s abandoned dream house and cons her way into his life. A comedy of escalating absurdity and frustration that betrays a sweet-souled core, Housesitter is one of the most underrated studio comedies of the nineties.
