Dir. Agnieszka Holland. 2024, 152 mins. Poland. In Polish, Arabic, and French with English subtitles. DCP. This wrenching drama from the great Polish director Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa) is among the most astonishingly urgent films of the decade, a vivid, multifaceted view of the global humanitarian crisis that takes both a macro political view and an intimate, personal accounting. The film begins from the perspective of a Syrian family desperate to escape their country’s violence and cross the border from Belarus into Poland before settling in Sweden. From this vérité start, however, Holland keeps expanding her narrative in outward concentric circles, encompassing a variety of characters, from border patrol to activist lawyers to journalists, showing how the Polish government treats refugees with unfeeling inhumanity, collateral damage in a deadly border game. Holland remains a tireless defender of human rights, as well as a singularly skilled cinematic dramatist.
