In one of the year’s most remarkable breakout performances, Lily Collias plays wise teenager Sam, who has been invited along with her divorced dad and his best friend on a weekend camping trip in upstate New York. Tensions rise among the three in unexpected ways, causing unhealed wounds to surface and subtle new fractures to erupt. Yet one seemingly tiny moment threatens to capsize the carefully honed reality of all three people, especially Sam, on the cusp of becoming her own strong individual. The feature debut of India Donaldson, Good One also boasts strong supporting work from James Le Gros and Danny McCarthy as men whose competitive streak has never left them, though they’re the ostensible adults. Moving, unsettling, and ultimately empowering, Donaldson’s film was a breakout of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
