Dir. Ryusuke Hamaguchi. 2023, 106 mins. Japan. In Japanese with English subtitles. DCP. Hitoshi Omika, Ryo Nishikawa, Ryuji Kosaka, Ayaka Shibutani. After his miraculous one-two punch of Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Oscar-winning filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi returned with this alternately beguiling and sinister drama set in the snowy climes of Mizubiki, a town outside of Tokyo. Into this peaceful, rural Eden comes a corporation with designs on setting up a profitable “glamping” site, which, its fearful denizens argue, will create major environmental pollution and change the overall economic and social landscape. Focusing on a local woodsman and his young daughter, who are reluctantly brought into the fight against the developers, Evil Does Not Exist slowly but surely transforms into a fable on man’s uneasy, symbiotic relationship to nature, buoyed by Hamaguchi’s singularly patient yet lucid storytelling.
