Dir. Richard Maurice. 1928, 60 mins. U.S. Digital projection. Director Richard Maurice, who created his independently financed silent films in Detroit, himself stars as a down-on-his-luck Black street violinist who makes it his mission to protect an orphaned child from hoodlums and criminals. This seemingly Chaplinesque setup becomes something entirely different, entering the world of the surreal, and culminating in a dreamlike vision of revenge. Innovative and consistently surprising, Maurice’s film is a genuinely original work of experimental narrative cinema.
