Dir. Carson Lund. 2025, 99 mins. U.S. DCP. Carson Lund ‘s elegiac, ribald, and entirely charming baseball movie lovingly celebrates a recent American past that already feels as though it’s slipping away. Set in 1990s Massachusetts in the autumn, the film follows a pair of amateur recreation league teams—the River Dogs and Adler’s Paint—as they play one last game at their beloved Soldiers Field before it’s torn down for the construction of a middle school. Middle-aged guys who might be losing their tough, they nevertheless maintain healthy doses of good-natured squabbling. This tranquil, moving, and funny film is a breeze, capturing the sport in all its beauty and goofball transcendence.
