Dir. Denis Villeneuve. 2024, 166 mins. U.S. 70mm. With Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken. Continuing the hero’s journey of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), as he and his mother, Lady Jessica (Ferguson), plot to secure their alliance with Arrakis’s indigenous Fremen against the corrupt Padishah Emperor (Walken) and the rapacious Harkonnens, the spectacular and sleekly streamlined second part of Villeneuve’s Dune surpasses its exposition-laden introductory chapter both visually and dramatically. Villeneuve renders Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi narrative with a sense of pictorial flow, scale, and expressionism reminiscent of the 1920s silent epics directed by Rex Ingram and Fritz Lang.
