Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Dimitris Bavellas. 2024. 88 mins. Greece. DCP. In Greek with English subtitles. With Haris Alexiou. This documentary traces the gentrification and virtual obliteration of Dourgouti, a residential district just south of the Acropolis. Rich in history, the area housed WWI refugees in the 1920s and served as the Armenian ghetto of Athens. During WWII, the neighborhood was the center of resistance against occupying Nazi forces. The construction of progressive public housing in the 1960s helped usher in the presentday gentrification. “We have to accept change,” says the director, who has roots in Dourgouti. “But we must work to prevent the mass exploitations of whole districts that have overwhelming consequences for the locals.”
