Dir. Frank Oz. 1988, 110 mins. 35mm. With Steve Martin, Michael Caine, Glenne Headly, Anton Rodgers, Barbara Harris. In this riotous farce set on the sparkling French Riviera, debonair con man Lawrence (Caine), who makes his living targeting wealthy women and cheating them out of a fortune, meets his match when he comes across uncouth American hustler Freddy (Martin), whose brand of crookery leaves much to be desired in the sophistication department. After blackmailing the suave Lawrence into training him, Freddy makes a wager to see who can con wealthy American soap heiress Janet Colgate (Headly) out of $50K first. Full of uproarious gags, twists, and turns, Oz’s remake of the 1964 comedy Bedtime Story is one of the funniest comedies of the 1980s, and features one of Martin’s most delightfully unhinged performances.
