CLOSING NIGHT
Director Giovanni Tortorici in person, followed by a reception!
Dir. Giovanni Tortorici. 2024, 109 mins. Italy/U.K. In Italian with English subtitles. With Manfredi Marini, Vittoria Planeta, Dana Giuliano, Zackari Delmas, Luca Lazzareschi, Sergio Benvenuto. Outstanding newcomer Marini plays Leonardo, a young man who leaves his home in Palermo to attend business school in London, where he lives and parties with his sister and her roommate. Disillusionment follows, catalyzing a pivot to study literature in historic Siena, a city that enchants him, although he sours on his professors and courses of study, leading him on a self-guided deep dive into early modern (aka academically passé) authors like Pulci, Segneri, and Leopardi. Increasingly intolerant of the larger world and others’ points of view, he finds a worthy sparring partner and a timely challenge to his ideas, desires, and slippery politics when encountering an older artist in Torino. Tortorici’s debut feature is as narratively deft as it is stylistically dashing, reminiscent of early Arnaud Desplechin as it zigzags temporally and tonally along with Leonardo’s impulsive, self-absorbed, and potentially toxic behavior. U.S. premiere.
