Part of Curators’ Choice 2023 and New Adventures in Nonfiction
With directors Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel in person
Dirs. Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor. 2022, France/Switzerland. 117 mins. DCP. Creators of adventurous, highly unorthodox nonfiction, Paravel and Castaing-Taylor have taken us to the hallucinatory world of a fishing boat in Leviathan and into the shocking psychological landscape of a man arrested for murder and cannibalism in Caniba. With De Humani Corporis Fabrica, they survey their most interior environments yet, filming in and around Parisian hospitals and using a variety of cinematic tools, including microscopic cameras, to enter the human body. Mesmeric, if not for the squeamish, this singular documentary invites viewers to witness flesh, viscera, and cavernous realms we may have never thought possible, allowing us to remain clinical yet awestruck by the wonders of our physicality, fragile yet resilient, and endlessly fascinating. A Grasshopper Film release.
