Day of the Dead 2024
Saturday, Nov 2, 2024 at 4:00 pm
Location: Kaufman Courtyard
From 4:00–6:00 p.m., celebrate a vibrant Day of the Dead at Museum of the Moving Image with a performance of Aztec Mexica dance, ofrendas, fun digital media activities for kids and families, and music from Indigenous dance troupe Yayauhki Tezcatlipoka. There will also be a face-painting session inspired by historical characters from Día de Muertos. All are welcome to explore our public altar in the Museum’s courtyard, followed by a catrina and catrin contest hosted by artist historian Rosa Ruíz and Catrinamía.
All performances are free. For a discounted price we will offer a special 6:30 p.m. screening of Alejandro Amenábar’s 2001 film The Others (PG-13), which tells the story of Grace (Nicole Kidman), who lives with her two children in an isolated mansion during World War II among a thick fog. Three individuals soon appear, whom Grace receives and leads into her home to work as servants. Grace’s children, Anne and Nicholas, suffer from a serious medical condition and can never be exposed to sunlight, living only by illumination of candles and fireplaces. The film immerses the viewer in a labyrinth of locked doors, where one begins to perceive the presence of “intruders” who seem to coexist in the house. Learn more and get tickets.
Ticket holders receive a 10% discount across the street at Tacuba Cantina Mexicana, where guests can sample a special menu of traditional Day of the Dead foods, with altars on view (discount valid for November 2, 2024 only).
