Part of Curators’ Choice 2024
With director Mati Diop in person
Dir. Mati Diop. 2024, 67 mins. Benin/France/Senegal. In English and French with English subtitles. DCP. The singular French Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop extends the phantasmagorical approach to history and politics she used for her superlative supernatural drama Atlantics in this poetic and immersive work of nonfiction that charts the journey of 26 royal treasures from their homes in Paris museums back to the Kingdom of Dahomey (the present-day Republic of Benin) where they originated. In this spellbinding and fanciful reckoning with colonialism and restitution, the African art works take on lives and voices of their own as they cross the sea for a homecoming. Winner of the Golden Bear from the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
