Convoy

Saturday, Nov 4 at 3:15 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Sam Peckinpah. 1978, 110 mins. 35mm. With Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Burt Young, Madge Sinclair, Franklyn Ajaye, Ernest Borgnine. This late 70s hit saw Hollywood renegade Peckinpah cash in on Carter-era America’s weird obsession with truckers and citizens band radio (CB). Kris Kristofferson plays Rubber Duck, an occasionally shirted truck driver regularly in CB contact with colleagues Pig Pen (Young), Widow Woman (Sinclair), and Spider Mike (Ajaye) to warn against the presence of cops. But when crafty Arizona Sheriff Lyle “Cottonmouth” Wallace (Borgnine) starts using their frequency to trick them into his speed traps, the crew coordinates a vast convoy to rule the road. Though roasted by critics who invoked negative comparisons to Duel and Smokey & the Bandit, Convoy was the highest grossing film of Peckinpah’s career, headlined by Kristofferson at his muscle-bound peak and a formidable crew of character actors led by a wise-cracking, cowboy-hatted Young, fresh off his Oscar nominated turn in Rocky.
