Dir. Agnès Varda. 1962, 89 mins. DCP. With Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller. Unfolding in real time, but with a jazzy, expressionistic style that echoes its heroine’s inner journey, Agnès Varda’s 1962 film is about a famous model whose health crisis (and a fateful tarot card reading) causes her to reevaluate her life as she wanders through Paris. One of the masterworks of the French New Wave, this is a “portrait of a woman painted onto a documentary about Paris.” As a dissection of celebrity culture and superficiality, the movie is timeless. Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) wrote the score, and Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina have cameos.
