Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2017, 69 mins. With Isabelle Huppert, Kim Min-hee, Jung Jin-young. In Korean with English subtitles. While visiting Cannes, a high school teacher (Huppert) develops a friendship with a young film sales assistant (Kim) who has just been fired by her boss after a one-night stand with a film director. The two women wander around the seaside town, working to better understand the circumstances of the assistant’s firing, taking pictures, and developing new outlooks on life in the process. Intricately plotted with wit and charm to spare, Claire’s Camera explores relationship dynamics and the transformative power of images.
“Charming and funny. One of Hong’s most formally intuitive and sharply written films.” — Sam C. Mac, Slant
