Dir. Tyler Taormina. 2024, 106 mins. U.S. DCP. With Matilda Fleming, Maria Dizzia, Ben Shenkman, Francesca Scorsese, Sawyer Spielberg, Elsie Fisher, Michael Cera, Gregg Turkington. Tyler Taormina’s third feature is an engrossing, endearing, and suitably melancholic entry into the holiday film genre, following a large Italian American family as its various members converge upon the family home in a northeast suburb for Christmas Eve. Small tensions threaten to explode into conflict among adult siblings, while children huddle and scheme away from view, and teenagers sneak out for illicit hangouts with their friends. Taormina proves deft at drawing our attention to a vast cast of characters, all of whom are distinctive, whether uncanny or eccentric, and judiciously alighted upon in Altmanesque fashion by DP Carson Lund (director of Eephus). Low–key cameos abound, including Cera and Turkington as ponderous policemen, Caveh Zahedi as a bodega owner, and auteur spawns Scorsese and Spielberg, but it’s the reliably striking Dizzia who brings the emotional depth befitting the heavy weight of the holidays.
