The first of Guadagnino’s two 2024 collaborations with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and musical duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (preceding Queer), this scintillating, sexy tennis drama follows a trio of characters whose mercurial relationship blurs the line between love triangle and throuple. Close friends and doubles partners, Patrick (O’Connor) and Art (Faist) find their dynamic irreversibly changed the moment tennis prodigy Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) enters their lives as teenagers. Several years and one career-ending injury later, Tashi finds herself coaching (and married to) one of the romantic rivals as he prepares to face off with his former best friend. Bolstered by Reznor and Ross’s kinetic score, wildly expressive cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and Kuritzkes’s brilliantly structured script, Challengers culminates in a tennis match with more at stake than mere points.
