Dir. Virgil Vernier. 2024, 77 mins. France. DCP. In French with English subtitles. With Zakaria Bouti, Victoire Song, Mina Gajovic. Drifting through an ethereal Monaco during the eerie, emptied-out limbo of the Christmas holidays, a diffident young sex worker named Afine (Bouti) goes about his rounds with seeming indifference, while gradually forming a strange, tentative bond with preadolescent Julia (Kong), whose parents, Chinese real estate developers, have left her in the charge of her Serbian babysitter Vesna (Gajovic). Littleknown Stateside, veteran filmmaker Vernier is one of French cinema’s best kept secrets, as proven by this wondrously ambiguous fable of the gig economy. North American premiere

About the filmmaker:

Virgil Vernier is one of the singular new voices in French cinema, a keen observer of globalized Europe whose work blends fiction, documentary and myth. He films contemporary characters in an understated style sensitive to the landscapes and history that have shaped them and leaving open the possibility for these subjects to surprise or captivate us. His films have been selected for the Directors’ Fortnight (Cannes), ACID (Cannes), Locarno, IndieLisboa, Berlin, Rotterdam, San Sebastian, etc. He has won awards such as the Jean Vigo Prize in 2022 for KINDERTOTENLIENDER and the Grand Prix at the Côté Court festival in 2021, leading to a César nomination for Best Short Film.
