Dir. Bernard Rose. 1992, 101 mins. U.S. DCP. With Tony Todd, Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkeley, Kasi Lemmons. When you say “Candyman” five times while looking in a mirror, a killer with a hook for a hand is summoned, with deadly consequences. A skeptical graduate student’s investigation of this Chicago urban legend initiates a series of unexplained murders that seem to link to both personal and historical traumas. Adapted from a short story by horror master Clive Barker and featuring an iconic performance from recently passed genre legend Tony Todd, Bernard Rose’s superlative supernatural horror movie is a multilayered, mind-bending thriller that doubles as a thoughtful exploration of race and gender in the American psyche.
