Dir. Les Blank. 1982, 95 mins. U.S. 4K DCP. Newly restored in pristine 4K and rereleased by Argot Pictures, Blank’s documentary remains perhaps the most compelling behind-the-scenes movie ever made about a film production, thanks to the mesmerizing personalities of director Werner Herzog and his deranged star Klaus Kinski. Shot on the set of Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo (1982), the film reveals the obsessive inner character of one of cinema’s most rigorous artists and the savage, awe-striking terrain of the South American jungle.
