Archipelago with Shonni Enelow in person

Saturday, Sep 14, 2024 at 1:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Followed by Q&A with Shonni Enelow (author of the new book Joanna Hogg) and novelist-critic Christine Smallwood, plus book signing with Enelow

Dir. Joanna Hogg. 2010, 114 mins. DCP. With Christopher Baker, Kate Fahy, Tom Hiddleston, Lydia Leonard, Amy Lloyd. Hogg’s emotionally unsettling second film, a chilling, oblique portrayal of emotional crisis, brought her to a wider international audience. The film details the unspoken, repressed tensions swirling around a wealthy family while at their vacation home on a remote island. Matriarch Patricia (Fahy) has gathered the clan here, including her daughter Cynthia (Leonard), to bid proper farewell to her Edward (Hiddleston), who is preparing to leave for a year of voluntary service in Africa. The absence of the family’s delayed father lets loose tensions, even as hired cook Rose (Lloyd) and painting teacher Christopher (Baker) try to inject casual normalcy into the weekend, but only further reveal their anxieties. Brilliantly using off-screen sound and single takes, Hogg heightens realism while calling attention to her film’s construction.

“Hogg’s second feature film strikingly resembles Virginia Woolf’s 1927 novel To the Lighthouse, [and] a modernist understanding of the lost stability of the domestic sphere illuminates both the film’s themes and its distinctive visual aesthetic.” —Shonni Enelow
