Apolonia Sokul appeared to be leading a storybook life when Danish filmmaker Lea Glob first met her in 2009. Born in an underground theater in Paris, she grew up surrounded by artists and studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Magnetized by her charisma, Glob kept returning to film Apolonia as she made her way in the art world, moved around the world, and navigated various relationships, including a long-standing partnership with Oksana Shachko, one of the founders of the feminist action group Femen. Filmed over a 13-year period, the film comes to document the unique bond between filmmaker and subject, two women whose life changes and challenges come to echo and refract each other. An epic double portrait of these artists, Apolonia, Apolonia is an unpredictable, entertaining, occasionally jaw-dropping film. Winner of Best Feature-Length Documentary at IDFA 2022 and nominated for a 2023 Gotham Award for Best Documentary.
