Dir. Sean Baker. 2024, 139 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Aleksei Serebryakov. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this spellbinding, bullet-paced modern-day screwball comedy follows a young sex worker from the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn named Ani (astonishing breakout Madison) whose life takes an unexpected turn when she goes home with a client at a club where she dances, the devil-may-care, childlike Vanya (Eydelshteyn). The two marry amidst a whirlwind weekend that takes them all the way to Vegas. As it turns out, however, Vanya is the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire oligarch, and when his parents find out about his marriage to Ani, they send their henchmen to settle things, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York. Baker’s lively, realist filmmaking skills pair perfectly and unexpectedly with the nimble narrative of this anti-Cinderella story, which grows increasingly poignant, culminating in an emotional final scene.
