With director Justine Triet in person!
Dir. Justine Triet. 2023, France. 150 mins. DCP. With Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Samuel Theis, Antoine Reinartz. Triet’s sly and formidable Palme d’Or winner takes the form of both courtroom procedural and marriage postmortem, with an astonishingly modulated performance at its center by the great Sandra Hüller. Novelist Sandra Voyter finds herself at the center of a firestorm of suspicion when her husband’s dead body is discovered on the snowy ground outside their house nestled in the French Alps. Though the way his body fell indicates he might have been pushed, Sandra insists on her innocence, leading to a rigorous and contentious trial, the outcome for which depends on her vision-impaired pre-teen son, who might have his own motivations. Triet’s film is one for which the viewer hangs on every tiny detail, hoping to extract knowledge and understanding about a case whose outcome may never crystallize—a forensic analysis of the endless mysteries of the human heart.. A NEON release.
