Dir. Payal Kapadia. 2024, 114 mins. India. In Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi with English subtitles. DCP. With Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Cchaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon. One of the year’s marvelous cinematic discoveries, Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival is a profoundly moving, meditative, exquisitely textured look at the lives of three women seeking love and spiritual sustenance in working-class Mumbai. Following her politically radical documentary breakout A Night of Knowing Nothing, Kapadia here moves to fiction, but with the observant and careful eye of a nonfiction master. Two roommates who work together in a city hospital—Prabha (Kusruti) and Anu (Prabha)—and their coworker, a cook named Parvaty (Kadam), deal with professional disappointments, housing crises, and the aftereffects of arranged marriages. From the swarming cityscape to the quiet peace of a seaside village, All We Imagine as Light is a soulful portrait of the mundane that feels revelatory in its simplicity and joy, capturing the nuance of living together in our world.
