A Swedish Love Story

NOTE: The December 29th screening will take place in the Bartos Screening Room.
Dir. Roy Andersson. 1970, 115 mins. DCP. With Ann-Sofie Kylin, Rolf Sohlman. With a gentle humanism and low-key lyricism reminiscent of the films of the Czech New Wave, Andersson’s beautifully observed debut is in many ways unlike his other films. Yet in contrast to the sweet, naive young teens at its center, played with wonderful naturalism by Ann–Sofie Kylin and Rolf Sohlman, lies the film’s Andersson-ian dark side, a view of adult life as filled with disappointment. The film was released in its own country as A Love Story, but the success of the Ryan O’Neal–Ali MacGraw blockbuster necessitated the title change elsewhere.
