Dir. Jesse Eisenberg. U.S. 90 mins. DCP. With Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin. Eisenberg’s marvelous comic drama takes the viewer on an unpredictable and emotional journey as it follows cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) on a trip across Poland, where they pay respects to their recently deceased grandmother. The two have drifted apart in recent years, with differing perspectives on the responsibilities of adult life; the tensions between the neurotic David and the seemingly free-spirited Benji reach a tipping point as their adventure grows increasingly fraught, the hefty baggage of both personal and tragic world history starting to wear them down. Elegantly constructed and cleverly written, A Real Pain is a two-hander showcase for a pair of our best contemporary American actors, while also underlining the difficulties of navigating a world of unyielding sadness with humor.
