Part of Curators’ Choice 2024
With Aaron Schimberg in person
Dir. Aaron Schimberg. 2024, 112 mins. U.S. DCP. With Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson. The winner of the Gotham Award for Best Picture, the latest from New York filmmaker Schimberg (Chained for Life) is a throwback to American independent films of yesteryear, a whip-smart, laceratingly funny genre crossbreed, situated in its own tragicomic realm somewhere between the poles of Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors and Cronenberg’s The Fly. A fully committed Stan plays an aspiring actor with severe facial tumors from neurofibromatosis, whose drab life consists of a revolving door of demeaning commercial shoots and unsuccessful auditions, until his physician proposes a miraculous experimental surgery that will change his life in unanticipated ways. A wryly sober study of the gap between perceived and embodied selfhood, Schimberg’s film is one of the most delightfully macabre of the year.
