The Awful Truth
Ongoing
Introduced by Farran Smith Nehme, author of Missing Reels, followed by a book signing
Dir. Leo McCarey. 1937, 91 mins. 35mm. With Irene Dunne, Cary Grant. Film critic Farran Smith Nehme is better known to cinephiles as the Self-Styled Siren, a specialist on Hollywood’s golden age. Her delightful new novel Missing Reels (2014, Overlook Press) is about a repertory-cinema-loving woman in 1980s New York who embarks on an epic search to find the missing reels of a long-lost silent film. Nehme will introduce a screening of Leo McCarey’s classic screwball comedy The Awful Truth, which plays a part in the novel’s plot. The film stars Irene Dunne and Cary Grant as a divorcing couple who attempt to thwart each other’s attempts to find new romance. Followed by a book signing in the Museum Store.
Tickets are included with paid Museum admission on a first-come, first-served basis. Members at the Film Lover level and above may reserve tickets in advance.
