Few films have ever taken advantage of the dramatic and expressive possibilities of wide screen quite like Vincente Minnelli’s melodrama about a veteran (Sinatra) who lands back in his nowhere hometown and must come to terms with the failings of his life while juggling loading situations involving a gambler (Dean Martin) and a lush (Shirley MacLaine) with a murderous boyfriend.
