Ongoing
Location: Redstone Theater
Screening followed by a discussion with Isabelle Huppert
Dir. Paul Verhoeven, 2016, 131 mins. With Isabelle Huppert. The new film by Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls, The Black Book) opens with a shock. Michèle, the head of a videogame company, is being attacked and raped in her home by a masked assailant. Rather than call the police, she finds herself fantasizing about the assault, and also about bloody revenge. Soon, the two are drawn into a curious, thrilling game that may spiral out of control. The legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert gives one of her greatest performances as Michèle, a woman she describes as “cynical, generous, endearing, cold, commendable, independent, dependent, perspicacious. She is anything but sentimental; she is pummeled by events, but she doesn’t crack.” Huppert, who will receive the Best Actress Award from the New York Film Critics Circle the night before this screening, will participate in a conversation with Chief Curator David Schwartz.
