Come and See
Dir. Elem Klimov. 1985, 142 mins. 35mm. With Aleksey Kravchenko, Olga Mironova, Liubomiras Lauciavicius, Vladas Bagdonas. One of the greatest of all World War II films, Elem Klimov’s hallucinatory Russian epic tracks partisans fighting the Nazis in Belorussia through the eyes of young Florya, a willing conscript quickly separated from his compatriots and rendered deaf by a German bomb blast. As the boy wanders the killing fields, Klimov’s tight 1.33:1 frame and increasingly intense sound design produce frightening claustrophobic effects.
