Reverse Shot Emerging Critics Workshop 2025

Part of First Look 2025

Working on It 2

MoMI announces an open call for submissions for the Reverse Shot Emerging Critics Workshop 2025, an initiative of the First Look festival's Working on It section, from March 12–14, 2025. Created in conjunction with MoMI's house publication for criticism, Reverse Shot, this program continues the Museum's Moving Image Institute in Film Criticism (2007–2008). For the Emerging Critics Workshop, the Museum gives a select group of young film writers the opportunity to meet established film critics and filmmakers, take part in talks and workshops, and attend and cover a major New York festival. Some of the most accomplished critics in the field will act as mentors during the workshop's three days, allowing a new generation of upcoming critics to engage in discussions about the present and future of film criticism. This program also helps foster bridges between critics and filmmakers, with critics invited to attend work-in-progress screenings, presentations, and talks about artistic process, and in turn filmmakers are encouraged to attend critic sessions.

MoMI is looking for applications from young writers with an interest in cinephilia and critical writing. Critics selected for the program will be required to attend three afternoons of workshops and discussions, with lunch, coffee, and snacks provided, as well as all-access passes to the First Look festival. As the Museum cannot provide travel expenses, we limit applicants to those in the greater New York City area. Anyone interested should send a cover letter expressing why they are interested in joining the workshop and three critical writing samples to [email protected]. Deadline for submission is February 14, 2025.
